Koh Tao hotel resort and lodgings guide

Koh Tao resorts double as dive operators
Koh Tao resorts double as dive operators

Koh Tao is unique among the islands in that most people come for the diving, therefore many dive outfits double as resorts and will offer you a complete package. The room rates are often cheap to encourage you to sign up for their dive trips. It is convenient to have everything in one location and many resorts are right near the beach. Non divers might find room rates offered at higher prices and without the free transfers and trimmings.

Koh Tao is a small island with most of the action centred along Sai Ri beach and Ao Mae, just north of the small town of Mae Hat. But there are other small delightful bays around the island and the picturesque Koh Nang Yuan.

Koh Tao lodging - where to stay

Hat Sai Ri - Ao Mae
This is a lovely long stretch of beach which hosts the largest selection of resorts and bungalows, usually on or near the beach. It’s equally good for beach lounging or basing yourself as a diver or dive student. By night you have a choice of lively places and find yourself close to the tourist facilities in Mae Hat.

Ao Chalok - Ao Thian Ok
Two small but pretty bays in the south of the island, each with half a dozen resorts or bungalows squeezed in and a modest beach. These are quieter and more suited to the serious diver. Around the corner from here, accessible by boat are some really remote humble bungalows at Ao Jun Jeau if you really want to escape the crowds.

Ao Hin Wong - Ao Tanot
These two bays on the east side have a cluster of bungalows and dive resorts and are more peaceful, but there is hardly a beach and it’s better for offshore snorkelling among the boulders.

Koh Nang Yuan
This pretty little offshore island in the North of Koh Tao features on all the postcards and has a stunning spit beach with boulder strewn islets, and a couple of exclusive resorts.
