May 03-05: Coronation Day
Where: Grand Palace, Bangkok
When: all day
His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej was crowned as Rama IX on May 5, 1950. Coronation Day is observed by a series of religious rites lasting for three days. On the first day, May 3, there is a ceremony at Amarindra Vinichai Hall in the Grand Palace.

May 06: Miss Tiffany Universe
Where: Tiffany's Show Theater

Miss Tiffany Universe is the world’s best beauty pageant with a gaggle of gorgeous girls pulling out all the stops to be crowed this year’s queen. Live on Thailand’s channel 7, tickets cost from 1,500 baht with proceeds going to the Red Cross.

May 07: River City Auction
Where: River City Mall, Trok Rongnamkhaeng, Bangkok,
When: starts 11:00
This monthly auction, held at the River City Shopping Complex Auction House, is a fantastic place to source genuine antiques or traditional Thai handicrafts. Lots may be viewed for five days beforehand between 11:00 and 17:00.

May 10: Royal Ploughing Ceremony
Where: Sanam Luang, Bangkok
When: All day
Brahmin priests use sacred oxen to forecast the year’s rainfall and harvest in costumed royal pageantry. Farmers then rush in to gather the blessed seeds. A state holiday only for civil servants.

May 17: Visakha Bucha Day
Where: all over Thailand
When: all day
Buddhism’s holiest date commemorates the Buddha’s birth, enlightenment and death. Devotees bring lunch to monks, then in the evening process around temples by candlelight. Alcohol is banned all day.

May 18: Full Moon Party
Where: Haad Rin Beach, Koh Pha Ngan
When: starts after dark
Thailand’s famous full moon party kicks off after dark on the beach of Haad Rin on the neighbouring island of Koh Phangan. Prepare to party hard as live music is hosted by a number of different beachside bars and DJs travel from all over the world to spin the latest tunes to party people.

May 22: Mai Khai Turtle Mini Marathon
Where: Pru Jeh San Lake, Mai Khao Beach, Phuket
When: 04:30 - 10:00
The seventh Mai Khao Turtle Mini Marathon raises funds for the Phuket Marine Biological Centre’s Marine Animal Stranding Rescue Project. Registrations start at 04:30 and the race starts at 06:00 sharp. Race fees are 250 baht for 10.5kms and 200 baht for 3.5kms. Fees include a T-shirt and a chance to win trophies, medals and lucky draw prizes.
